The formula contains antioxidants, vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, zinc, and copper. It is gluten-free and does not contain any artificial flavors or preservatives. The National Eye Institute conducted two studies, AREDS and AREDS2, to determine the effectiveness of the formula. The addition of omega-3 fatty acids to the supplements did not improve the formula's success. The antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin proved safer than beta-carotene, which increases the risk of lung cancer for smokers or ex-smokers. AREDS contained beta-carotene, whereas AREDS2 contains lutein and zeaxanthin. The formula is not chewable and should be swallowed whole.
